About NameMochi

NameMochi helps expecting and new parents see what a name is doing: how many babies get it, whether it is rising or fading, and where it is most popular.

What we do

NameMochi turns the US Social Security Administration’s baby name data into plain-language name pages, data stories and a name finder. Every number you see is calculated directly from the official files, and every page is checked automatically against that data before it goes live.

Beside the numbers, each name page explains where the name comes from, who has carried it and where it shows up in books and television. Those facts come from published sources that we link on the page.

Who is behind it

NameMochi is an independent project run by the NameMochi Editorial team. We do not name individual authors, and we do not claim credentials we do not have. If something on a page looks wrong, tell us and we will check it against the data and the sources.

How we keep it honest

  • Numbers come from the official Social Security files, not from other websites.
  • Rankings and counts are calculated, not typed in. When the data changes each spring, the pages are rebuilt and checked again.
  • Where a name’s origin is uncertain, we say so instead of picking one story.
  • Observations that can be read straight from the data are labelled “From the data”. Our own conclusions are labelled “Our view”.
  • We do not invent quotes, reviews or testimonials.

What we are not

NameMochi covers names given to babies born in the United States. It does not tell you what to call your child, and a name’s popularity says nothing about whether it will suit your family.
